if you value convenience, you WANT this lens ...
I had been coveting this lens for a while as it has incredible range and allows me to travel with only one body and lens. But it always seemed justr a bit too expensive for the convenience. I was also having trouble imagining how it could possibly be as good as my excellent 70-300 Tamron. Then I ended up travelling with way too much equipment and found it exhausting to have to carry two bodies and lenses everywhere, so I sprung for this lens and had it shipped to the house I was staying in while away. What a great idea that turned out to be. I used this lens for the entire rest of the trip and have been completely blown away by the combination of range and excellent image quality. The sharpness is excellent at all focal lengths, and it beats the 70-300 in its range, which is a pleasant surprise. One othe r advantage to this lens ... the close focus is really fun to use. I rarely feel the need to grab my macro lens. It gets fairly close and stays sharp there. It does have the compromises you expect of course, which is to say that it is not perfect. The two things I would love to be a bit better are:1. VC is a bit weak. The viewfinder never stabilizes like that of the 70-300. But it settles enough to get the shot. Remember that this is shot a lot at 400, which is 600 effective, so you can't really expect it to behave like a prime or shorter zoom. And VC does help.2. CA is apparent at 400, even in the centre of the frame. But it disappears in Lightroom simply by clicking remove CA. No special attention required. And the edges don't smear, so the CA does little real damage. Note that it is not all that wide a band of CA, so it is only really noticeable at 100%. I.e. it does not bother me but must be mentioned. So there you have it. I am over the moon for this lens. On my D7200 thi s is a stunning addition to my equipment. - Reviewed by Panda Bear (Reviewed in Canada on August 28, 2019)
This is a do-it-all lens having a reach of 18mm to 400mm.
I expected average quality from this lens and I have got it. Don't try to compare it to specialized wide angle lens like the Sigma ART series, or Nikon 85mm or other prime lens. But comparing it to Nikon's 18-300mm lens, this has better reach. About the same quality. The Focus maybe an issue, we shall see. So far, this is my travel lens with a Nikon D7200. It should work well. - Reviewed by Trpimir J. (Reviewed in Canada on June 21, 2018)
So far the best all around lens
Replaced my Nikon 18-200 with this lens. Very happy with the decision. If you want all around lens, this is so far the best option considering the ratio price/weight/size.Although I was reluctant to believe the multiple good reviews, I am definitely happy with my decision. However keep in mind that this is all around lens and it's not meant to replace any 2.8 pro zoom or similar. - Reviewed by Freddy Hubert (Reviewed in Canada on March 3, 2019)
Versatile lens
A very versatile lens, with an enormous focal range. Yes, the F-stop numbers aren't phenomenal, but that's to be expected from a lens at this price point. It's a good all-round lens to take with you if you don't have the space, energy or time to take the whole set with you.Tamron quality is excellent. Nothing feels cheap on this lens. - Reviewed by Yaroslav Yurkevych (Reviewed in Canada on September 16, 2019)
Great quality/value lens. Only 18-400mm on the market
First of all, let's begin by saying that this is not a prime lens. Do not expect it to give you the quality and the bokeh of let's say Nikon 50mm 1.8G. But, for the versatility that it offers, it is unbeatable. 18-400mm. Nothing else like that on the market. And the pictures t urn out quite good. not happy with this purchase
I found the lens to be slow to focus at several focal lengths, the pictures that i cropped were not crisp and quite soft on the detail. i also found the zoom to be a bit cranky between 200-400. a bit disappointed as i was really looking to this as a good travel option for my D810. - Reviewed by Wayne (Reviewed in Canada on April 3, 2019)
Great lens and great versatility.
I am very pleased with this product. Besides being great value ($100 cheaper that I could get it locally.) it is a very versatile lens (18 mm - 400) giving me great range with a single lens. I have only used it a couple of times so far but the results are very pleasing. - Reviewed by Andy vG (Reviewed in Canada on April 2, 2020)
Love it!!
The only thing I can say is that all the hardli ne reviews out there do not justify the poor reviews. This lens is wonderful.
