Just "Snap it on"! -- This opens up a whole new world of photography :)
I ordered this macro lens as I really wanted to see if I would enjoy "extreme" magnification photography before I went all out to spend hundreds on a dedicated macro lens. I have a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II prime (nifty fifty), Canon EF-S 18-135mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS STM & a Canon EF 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 III USM lens. I was thrilled at the notion that I could snap this macro adapter lens on any one of these three lenses with minimal light loss and since it's a 3-element lens there is little distortion/aberration that isn't corrected.Using a macro lens takes some practice but this little baby delivers! Furthermore it's snap-on ability makes it possible to be SPONTANEOUS when a macro situation arises (instead of having to switch up lenses when you go from the real world to the macro world in terms of subject matter). The spring action holding this lens on is pretty impressive.. At first I was all paranoid that it would fall off easily, but it doesn't.. and it's small enough to put in your pocket if need be. It comes in a protective case with covers for both sides of the lens. It's stated that it's not weather resistant (so store it somewhere dry), but I think if you care for it, it should last indefinitely.Purchasing this product is not something I will regret EVEN if I end up buying a dedicated macro lens... the portability and versatility of this adapter will always make it a ready selection in my kit. While I've since also purchased and experimented with extension tubes and reverse-macro-mounted lenses, this lens doesn't greatly reduce light like the other options do.I mentioned the lenses I have used with it just to make a point: with the 50mm lens it works great.. with the 18-135mm lens, you have severe vignetting unless the zoom is at about 105mm or above . I found that the 75-300mm lens was amazing... the raynox mounted at 300mm gives some pretty extreme magnification on my canon t5i (700D).If you're exploring the field of macro photography, I'd definitely recommend this product. Beware of cheaper macro lenses.. they badly distort and cause aberrations since they are usually single element lenses (they are a waste of money).I attached a photo of a fly to the product photo catalogue... - Reviewed by Jesterger (Reviewed in Canada on May 18, 2017)
A Valuable Tool for Point and Shoot Cameras
I got this to use on my Nikon Coolpix P900 camera. It works best at full zoom. The magnification is unbelievable, although the depth of field is quite shallow. I would also recommend using a flash or tripod to capture the sharpest images. You can also get post production, software that enhances the image sharpness for some truly spectacular images. The picture included is a handheld shot of pollen on a flower's stamen. - Reviewed by Herman (Reviewed in Canada on December 6, 2019)
This lens increases the magnification of the prime lens.
I have been using this mainly with my macro lens so far, and it doubles the magnification. It is a very high quality lens and there seems to be no loss of image quality. I have not yet used it with my 70 - 300 mm telephoto lens, but it will in effect double the focal length of the lens. A great choice if you want to increase the magnification of your subjects. - Reviewed by soeta (Reviewed in Canada on January 20, 2015)
Excellent
This is a good macro snap on lens. The build quality is excellent. You can get a real macro 1:1 on APSC sensor only if you put on (greater) >115mm zoom lens. I use Tamron 16-300mm lens and zoom to max 300mm then snap it on, I got 2.4x magnification (see the attached picture), amazing! How to calculate a magnification? My camera is Canon 70D, the sensor size i s 22.5mm x 15mm. I took a picture of a ruler and got in focus on the ruler showed 9.5mm.Here is the calculation: Length of the sensor / length of the picture captured = 22.5 / 9.5 = 2.4. So I got 2.4x of magnification !.If you want a just for fun and cheaper macro photography get this one, but serious macro photography get the real macro lens.Yes I recommend this Raynox 250 to everyone who wants to get a cheaper alternative macro lens. - Reviewed by Pet Halibut (Reviewed in Canada on December 9, 2013)
Works well but very shallow DOF
It works quite well on the 50mm, with a creamy bokeh and workable depth of field. When attached to the 300mm, the magnification is huge but the DOF is so shallow, even at f/40, that getting a crisp focus point is difficult - I'd rather use extension tubes at that focal length.Since I shoot a lot with the 50mm, it's very convenient to be able to just snap the Raynox lens if I want to do a quick macro shot without hav ing to swap lenses on the camera. The optical quality is very nice, despite the field curvature. Autofocus is possible with the 50mm but on the 300mm it's useless.
