I've had a hard time getting good lens from Rokinon lately
I've had a hard time getting good lens from Rokinon lately. This was my third attempt after two defective lenses with the 24mm F1.4. I ended up getting a sigma 24mm F1.4 instead since I didn't want to attempt a third try with the Rokinon 24mm F1.4. The sigma is more costly but I was tired of going back to Canada post to return items. However, I took a chance with the Rokinon 14mm F2.8 since I heard this lens is much easier to produce when compare to the 24mm. WOW is all I have to say! The picture quality of this lens is unbelievable. I took astrophotos with both the Rokinon and Sigma and they were both just as good as each other. The angle is larger of course for the Rokinon but its overall clarity is on par with the sigma. You need to try this lens! - Reviewed by Darren W. (Reviewed in Canada on January 6, 2019)
Great lens (didn't buy off amazon)
This lens is incredible. Everything I was wanted and does not disspoint.Imagine quality is spot on, only issue is there is a small amount of distortion (isn't noticeable until you fix it in post) but it can be easily fixed and not even noticed most times. Also there is some lens flair but thst is to be expected when you see how monstrous the glass is on the element, its beutifullll.Nothing really else to say. Was looking for a good wide angle lens for shooting stars and I got exactly what I wanted. You won't be disspointed. Also people are questioning the no auto focus and this lens Only being manual, its not a problem at all. Especially when using it for astrophotography u can't use auto anyway and a electronic focus ring is HELLLLL. - Reviewed by Brenda (Reviewed in Canada on July 24, 2016)
Very capable lens at an affordable cost!
This is a wonderful le ns! I initially bought it for astrophotography; I'm a novice in that area but had read several reviews by more experienced people and decided to give it a try, I couldn't afford the top Canon primes and thought this would be a nice alternative. It most definitely has lived up to my expectations. It's very sharp and my Milky Way shots have exceeded my hopes for them I'm using it on a Canon 7D with APS-C sensor but intend to buy a full-frame camera very soon - probably a 6D - and am looking forward to using the lens on that. I'll just set it to infinity and let it do its thing. There is some star trailing toward the edges but nothing I can't tolerate or crop. Any issues with photo noise are mine and the camera's, not the fault of the lens. The more I use it, the better I like it.I have also experimented with landscape and seascape shots and once again, I'm extremely happy with the results. Given that this is a wide-angle prime, there is some distortion if you photograph at fa irly close range. A building will have that characteristic slant at either hand. You can correct this in post-processing but it might mean losing part of the structure through a crop. But for a sweeping view, it's amazing. There's a learning curve when you first start working with primes. I also have a Canon 40 F/2.8 STM mm and 50 mm F/1.8 STM (the "nifty fifty") and started out with those. It takes time to master their use and I'm not there yet! However, they also demand that you become a better photographer. If at first the Rokinon seems difficult or frustrating, just keep pushing yourself. It's a fairly substantial lens in terms of both weight and build. The petal lens hood is permanent. I find it keeps out a lot of extraneous light and cuts back on lens flare so that's fine by me. I stopped noticing it within a few minutes. My only complaint is that Amazon advertises Express Shipping with an expected delivery date that is simply not feasible if an item comes from th e USA. I paid extra for Express but might as well not have bothered. I could have had free shipping and probably gotten it just as quickly. Live and learn. But this isn't the fault of the lens!Highly recommended, especially if your budget doesn't allow for the big-ticket Canon gear. - Reviewed by Dave (Reviewed in Canada on February 24, 2018)
It's ok but not exactly what I was looking for...
I bought this lens for astrophotography. The only comments I can make is how this lens performed in low light. I never used it for anything else. I own the art series sigma 20 mm 1.4 mm and the tamron SP 15 to 30 mm 2.8 mm lens with for my canon 6D for low light photography. I was looking for a third lens and this wasn't it. I couldn't get around the vignetting around the edges, it drove me up the wall. I read a lot of reviews on this lens and it came highly recommended by other astrophotographers. From the comments made, the glass and the speed of the le ns was off the charts. The middle of the frame was able to pick up a lot of light from the milky way but quickly dissipated closer to the edges. I suppose to could have cropped off the edges but why buy a 14 mm if I am going to crop. The lens did not meet my needs and expectations. Mind you this lens is on the low end and very affordable. I never used it for landscapes or anything else other than astrophotography. For a budget lens, I would recommend it because the middle of the frame was able to catch a lot of light but if you have a couple of extra bucks to spend, I would go with a sigma art series or the SP tamron. Both are good at capturing low light imagines... - Reviewed by JayP (Reviewed in Canada on January 18, 2017)
Great manual wide angle lens. Super sharp!
Finaly decided to get one of these! Bought it when it was on sale on boxing day. I've used it a bit and it's very nice. Really nice quality and feel. Although it's fully manual, it is still super easy to use. And I've never used a manual lens before. You have to focus as well as set the aperture manually. In your camera settings you can then set your Shutter speed and ISO manually. The lens does not include an AE chip (Although there is one available that offers that) so your camera won't know when the shot is correctly exposed. The lens cap is nice, it covers the full front of the lens and hood. Only thing that would be nice is to have the ability to remove the hood and just put the cap on the lens. It would take less room in my bag that way but that's a minor thing. I still give it 5 stars.I can't wait to have the opportunity to use it for astro!
